Job Summary

As a  PSEGLI substation Operations Supervisor in Transmission Operations you will supervise, train and coordinate the work of personnel responsible for the 24 x 7 operation and inspection of the electric system, including all substation equipment, oil and gas-filled cable systems, diesel generators and gas insulated bus systems.

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the safe and reliable operation of the LIPA transmission and substation system.
  • Management of 1049 employees performing all applicable first line supervision duties.
  • In close coordination with Engineering and Asset Strategy, development of specifications, standards and operation guidelines for substation equipment. Development and implementation of safety, equipment and administrative procedures. Administration and enforcement of company policies and procedures, department/division policies, rules for safe operation, OSHA standards and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Analysis of equipment operations in order to identify potential problems and associated corrective actions.  Model and promote a strategy of continuous improvement in the Substation Operations area with the purpose of maintaining a high level of safety and system reliability.  Responsible for the application of new technology based solutions to any operating problem.
  • Participates in the developing of the capital work plan for substations.  Responsible for the review and acceptance of all new substation equipment.
  • Participates in supervisor’s 24-hour standby schedule for consultation and advice to others on equipment problems and for dispatching Multi Station Operators during emergencies.
  • Ensure that required policies and procedures are being followed, and that any local department-level procedures encompassing the NERC Compliance Standards Requirements are up to date and aligned with all current Standards Requirements assigned.
  • The successful candidate will be strongly encouraged and supported to complete the NERC Transmission Operator certification exam and all required continuing training and requirements for the Electric System Operator position, ensuring that he/she will be ready and qualified to pursue the Transmission System Operator career path if available and desired.  This career path would require a rotating schedule of both a regular M-F schedule as well as a rotating 12 hour shift consisting of days & nights.

 

Job Specific Qualifications

Required Education, Knowledge and Experience:

Preference will be given to applicants that meet at least one of the following three qualifications:

  • Four-year engineering or technical degree plus three years of experience in the area of system protection, substation maintenance, transmission planning, power systems engineering or operations.
  • Associate’s degree in an engineering or technical field plus four years of experience in the area of system protection, substation maintenance, transmission planning, power systems engineering or operations.

In lieu of degree

  • Six years of experience in a transmission, distribution or generation operating environment.

  • Applicant will be required to take an approved work aptitude test by an outside consultant in order to accept this position.
  • The successful candidate will be encouraged to prepare for and pass the NERC Transmission Operator Certification exam within one year of accepting the position if the intent is to progress into the System Operator job once a position becomes available.
  • Basic knowledge of computer operations and applications is preferred.
  • Leadership skills and the ability to supervise others are necessary.
  • Technically proficient within subject matter and experience in leading a team involved in transactional operational services.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of tools and systems within designated area.
  • Knowledge and understanding of PSEGLI policies and processes and their effective application to the Substation Operations processes.
  • Must have experience managing a team with the ability to build effective, respectful, working relationships.
  • Experience with managing the work of an operational area and demonstrated ability to take actions to enable the team to function efficiently and effectively.
  • Knowledge and understanding of regulatory issues affecting the industry.
