Job Summary

This position reports to the Protection Engineering Supervisor for the successful execution of interconnecting Distributed Energy Resources into the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) distribution system. Advanced knowledge and experience of protective relay systems for electric T&D systems will influence strategic initiatives and ensure adequate protection of the LIPA distribution system. Specific functional organization interface includes Power Markets, Power Asset Management, Utility 2.0, Operations and Maintenance, and all T&D engineering disciplines. Works to perform complex engineering studies to allow for the safe and reliable interconnection of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into the LIPA Area EPS. Reviews engineering documentation such as site electrical drawings, studies, protective relay settings and test reports. Performs engineering design of distribution substation modifications associated with DER interconnections. Involved in all aspects of protective relay systems associated with the LIPA Small Generator Interconnection Procedures (SGIP) including development of new standards. Supports various industry working groups and efforts to increase hosting capacity of DER.

Job Responsibilities

  • Review DER interconnections for feasibility, engineering design, and protective relay settings  that include Solar, Wind, Fuel Cells, Battery Storage, Micro-grids, Synchronous and Induction Generators for compliance with LIPA distribution interconnect standards. Interface with Power Asset Management, other Engineering sections, Operations, and Maintenance areas to prepare schematic drawings and order material associated with the DER interconnection into an Area EPS and/or various LIPA distribution substations.
  • Perform revisions to LIPA three line AC, DC, relay functional, and one line drawings to add new and/or modify existing controls and protective relaying such as Direct Transfer Trip (DTT), Transformer LTC, Feeder Relays, and 3V0 relay schemes. Produce Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) changes for LIPA substation RTU and for Developer RTUs.
  • Revise technical requirements for interconnection of DER, inclusive of both generation and electric energy storage, into various locations in the LIPA distribution system. These must comply with LIPA Control & Protection standards, applicable NERC PRC standards, IEEE Std. 1547-2018 Interconnection and Interoperability of Distributed Energy Resources, and Underwriter's Laboratories (UL) 1741SB, Inverters, Converters, Controllers and Interconnection System Equipment for Use with Distributed Energy Resources.
  • Perform various engineering studies including, but not limited to, Short-Circuit studies, Protective Relay/Device Coordination studies, Grounding studies, and Arc Flash Incident Energy studies.
  • Review Developer protective relay system design, settings, test plans and test results for conformance to LIPA standards and prudent engineering practice.
  • Perform system disturbance analyses associated with protection system trip events.
  • Support Industry Working Groups and Utility 2.0 efforts to increase Hosting Capacity of DER.

Job Specific Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor of Science, Electrical Engineering
  • 4 Years of relevant work experience with at lest 3 years of experience specific to a System Protection Analysis
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes (ANSI, IEEE, NFPA, UL, NESC)and regulatory requirements-NERC/FERC/NPCC)
  • Demonstrated, advanced technical/professional knowledge and experience in Distribution Energy Resources interconnections.
  • Possess a high level of Electric Delivery System knowledge.
  • Requires a strong technical background.
  • Demonstrated planning and organizing skills and focus on required schedules for multiple projects.
  • This position requires driving to company locations and off-site assignments and events, applicants must possess and maintain a valid US driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driver history
