The Nuclear Fuel Performance Program Leader (FPPL) is responsible for both the Fuel Reliability Program and the Fuel Fabrication Oversight Program. 

 

Duties include the following:

• Provide Governance, Oversight and Support to station Reactor Engineering and Chemistry personnel in fulfilling their responsibilities for monitoring and evaluating reactor coolant chemistry as it relates to fuel reliability such that reactor coolant chemistry is maintained consistent with fuel vendor guidance, chemistry-related fuel failures do not occur, and fuel failures are promptly detected and monitored.  Perform independent assessment of reactor coolant chemistry.

• Provide Governance, Oversight and Support to station Reactor Engineering and corporate Nuclear Fuels personnel in fulfilling their responsibilities for the design and operation of the fuel such that Pellet-Cladding Interaction (PCI) fuel failures do not occur.  Perform independent assessment of PCI-related core reload documentation and PCI monitoring during and/or following reactor maneuvers.

• Provide Governance, Oversight and Support to fuel inspection and handling such that fuel damage does not occur.  Perform independent assessment of fuel inspection results.

• Provide Oversight and Support of the Foreign Material Exclusion Program as it relates to fuel reliability such that debris-related fuel failures do not occur.  Perform independent assessment of Lost Parts Evaluations performed by station Engineering.

• Perform oversight of the fabrication of fuel and control rods by conducting surveillances, performing manufacturing audits, and reviewing vendor documents such that manufacturing-related fuel failures do not occur.

• Perform technical assessments/evaluations of product and process changes implemented by the fuel and control rod vendors.

• Participate on the stations’ Fuel Failure Management Teams (FFMT) to ensure that the response to actual or potential fuel failures is timely and appropriate.  Perform independent assessment of FFMT and fuel vendor recommendations.

• Perform Nuclear Fuels Lost Parts Evaluations for lost parts potentially impacting the fuel.

• Support and Perform Design Changes related to fuel and control rods.

• Lead initiatives to improve the Fuel Reliability Program and the Fuel Fabrication Oversight Program such that they perform with sustained excellence.

• Maintain the procedures supporting the Fuel Reliability Program and the Fuel Fabrication Oversight Program consistent with vendor guidance/recommendations/requirements, industry best practices, EPRI guidelines, and INPO documents.

• Maintain PSEG Nuclear data in the EPRI Fuel Reliability Database (FRED).

• Participate in related industry conference calls, working groups, and meetings.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering. Recent graduates must provide a transcript from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Knowledge of fuel mechanical design and fuel manufacturing processes.  
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, and exhibit sound judgment and strong initiative on resolution of issues.  
  • Ability to travel up to 20% per year. 
  • Must meet Nuclear’s requirements for unescorted site access. 
  • Must be capable of being a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO).

 

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Advanced Engineering degree.
