Position Description:

 

The Load Research Specialist position is responsible for performing statistical analysis to provide insight into customer energy usage patterns.

This position has a career path which provides for promotional opportunities within and across grades as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills. 

This is a multi-level growth series position, the title, grade level and incentive target assigned to the successful candidate will be determined by assessing skills and related experience, learned through the interview process. 

 

Duties include (but not limited to):

 

  • Produce class average load profiles from interval meter data using accepted industry techniques to support Rate Design , Cost of Service Studies, Energy Efficiency, Forecasting, and Retail Settlement
  • Support monthly energy and capacity market settlement in NY state by calculating and submitting energy and capacity data for all Load Serving Entitles on Long Island (NYISO Zone K)
  • Design load research and special studies by applying statistical sampling techniques and theory
  • Develop data models, analytics, reporting, and visualization to provide insight into customer usage patterns 
  • Consult to other business groups on statistical analysis methods
  • Keep current with industry trends by communicating with counterparts at other utilities, regulators, and vendors.  Recommend improvements to statistical methods and tools to reflect best practices.
     
    Education and Qualifications (required):
     
  • A Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Engineering, or a related field.

 

  • Specialist  -  Minimum 3 years of related experience with intermediate knowledge of a data science programming language (SAS, R, Python, or similar).
  • Senior Specialist -  Minimum 5 years of related experience with proficiency in a data science programming language (SAS, R, Python, or similar).
  • Lead Specialist - Minimum 7+ years of related experience with proficiency in a data science programming language (SAS, R, Python, or similar).

 

  • Solid oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to handle time sensitive deliverables requiring a high degree of accuracy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated statistical analysis and data modeling skills including experience with sampling methods, regression, clustering, and time series analysis.
  • Ability to efficiently analyze large data sets.
  • This position requires driving to company locations and off-site assignments and events, applicants must possess a valid driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driver history.

    Desired:

 

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Strong statistical analysis and data modeling skills including experience with sampling methods, regression, clustering, and time series analysis.
  • Prior experience in load research, forecasting, rates/pricing, or utility data analytics is highly desired.
  • Experience providing testimony in rate case proceedings a plus.
  • Knowledge of load research best practices and experience presenting at conferences and workshops.
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency and Demand Side Management) DSM programs a plus.
  • Familiarity with energy and capacity markets, preferably NYISO.
     
    If an internal candidate is selected they will move laterally at their current grade level and will not be eligible for a promotion at the time of accepting this position.  This applies to candidates moving within the same career path (e.g., analyst, supervisor, engineer), or to a different career path (e.g., analyst to engineer, supervisor to analyst).  The selected candidate will have an opportunity to be promoted within the career path during an annual review.
