Summer Interns: College students are hired based on strategic university recruiting needs as identified on an annual basis. The intern period is a minimum of 10 weeks, beginning June 3, 2019 and ending Mid- August.
 

Position Description:

This position is part of a team responsible for planning of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) transmission system from 23kV through 345kV and overall coordination and compliance of elements on the bulk electric system with applicable reliability standards. This position offers challenging opportunities and problem solving scenarios where the intern will be able to incorporate and observe his or her creative ideas come to fruition. On the job training and adequate guidance are provided to interns as needed.

 

Duties include (but not limited to):

 

  • Responsible for studies involving LIPA transmission system from 23kV through 345kV and overall coordination of all the elements on the interconnected bulk and sub-transmission systems.
  • Perform and recommend transmission plans required to adequately serve existing and future load and resource power injections including that from the responses to RFPs (Request for Proposal)
  • Conduct long-range transmission studies including study of new capacity resources resulting in annual capital construction programs and system improvement projects.
  • Recommend changes to the existing transmission system to optimize performance, maintain safety, increase reliability and minimize environmental impact. 
  • Perform, oversee and approve system impact studies of merchant project proposals and municipal delivery requirements, which may impact the power system.
  • Evaluate various interconnection proposals through system studies and recommend the most optimum plan for the system
  • Conduct complex power system design studies (load flow, short circuit, and stability) and financial analyses to compare different alternatives, while ensuring the Long Island power system is compliant with governing design criteria, including mandatory NERC Bulk Electric System (BES) requirements 
  • Responsible for the LIPA Transmission System compliance with applicable regulatory rules including LIPA’s transition to “Transmission Planner” registration.
  • Create a compliance infrastructure within Network Strategy Planning to meet NERC regulatory requirements with respect to revised definition of Bulk Electric System.
  • Utilize logical reasoning in conjunction with electric power systems knowledge to properly conduct and analyze various power system studies and activities that are required to maintain a safe and reliable transmission system
  • Assess and implement software’s that support the installation of compliance infra-structure
  • Integration of renewable and non-conventional technologies consistent with NYS Department of Public Service “Reforming the Energy Vision” initiative
  • Support rate case submittal to Public Service Commission
  • Utilize and implement the power of Python programming resulting in different and efficient methods of conducting the studies
  • Support initiatives with NYISO, NPCC and other Transmission owners on behalf of LIPA Transmission planning to support regional initiatives and study efforts

 

Education and Qualifications:

Required:

 

  • College level rising Juniors and Seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher seeking an engineering degree.
  • This position requires driving to company locations and off-site assignments and events, applicants must possess a valid driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driver history.
