This position reports to the Director, Meter Services and provides leadership, administration and implementation for PSEG Long Island Customer Service Operations' Safety Program by establishing and maintaining accountability for industrial health and safety performance and associated training programs for PSEG Long Island Customer and Meter Service Operations locations.  Establishes safety, health and training programs under the direction of the Customer Services’ Safety Program Manager and provides technical oversight, guidance and administrative support to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations pertaining to employee safety and health across the various locations.

This position implements actions to manage loss control and accident prevention activities, while ensuring compliance.  It is also responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of safety programs, strategies, policies, training, and procedures and is responsible and accountable for improvement in year over year health and safety scorecard measures and progress toward top decile Customer Operations’ H&S performance.  Overall, the position works to establish and promote maintenance of a safe, accident-free, and healthy work environment by performing the following duties

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Customer Services Health and Safety Team including Safety Coordinator(s) and Local 1049 Safety Advocate(s)
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) within Customer Services for all matters pertaining to health and safety, managing all health and safety related incidents in partnership with Company Medical Department
  • Manage Safety Information and Management System (SIMS) to ensure accurate reporting to executives and regulatory agencies including OSHA
  • Review and analyze health and safety data to identify related trends and develop recommended actions and programs to improve performance
  • Oversee and actively participate in the Safety Council Structure (Levels I, II, III) to ensure top-down/ bottom-up communication between all levels/lines of business
  • Develop safety programs, initiatives and trainings that drive improved safety performance across Customer Services
  • Develop and implement Corporate Safety Plan detailing initiatives aimed at achieving goals/metrics
  • Identify best practices and lead continuous improvement initiatives to mitigate potential hazards, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices
  • Facilitate a work environment that supports a strong, safe and healthy culture
  • Provide overall management, administration and maintenance of License Monitoring System
  • Manage Health and Safety Recognition programs for Customer Services
  • Develop safety programs, initiatives and trainings that drive improved safety performance across Customer Services
  • Develop and implement Corporate Safety Plan detailing initiatives aimed at achieving goals/metrics
  • Identify best practices and lead continuous improvement initiatives to mitigate potential hazards, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices
  • Facilitate a work environment that supports a strong, safe and healthy culture
     
    Required Education, Experience and Competencies:
  • BS/BA in Occupational Safety & Health with a minimum of 6 years’ work experience with direct safety related responsibilities within the utility or similar industry, including demonstrated capabilities in performing root cause analyses and safety incident investigations, Or
  • In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of work experience with direct safety related responsibilities within the electric utility or similar industry, including demonstrated capabilities in performing root cause analyses and safety incident investigations
  • Demonstrated managerial/leadership abilities with strong safety focus and commitment to continuous improvement; Experience in safety program and/or compliance management, safety consulting or safety regulatory agency experience
  • Good networking skills with demonstrated ability to effectively interact with employees at all levels in the organization, ranging from field personnel to senior leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to grasp, understand and disseminate technical subject matter to drive safety improvements
  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state and local occupational health & safety regulations, corporate health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of DOT and EPA standards
  • Ability to quickly learn and interpret line of business and corporate health and safety policies and procedures
  • Strong written and communication skills. Experience in developing and delivering presentations
  • This position requires driving to company locations and off-site assignments and events, applicants must possess a valid driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driver history.

 

Desired skills:

  • Completed coursework/education in electric technology field
  • MS/MA in Safety related area of specialty
  • T&D utility industry experience or knowledge
  • Professional certification in environmental or safety specialty (CHMM, CSP, CUSP, CUSA, CIH, QEP, or PE)
  • Professional certification in safety specialty (CSP, CUSP, CUSA, etc.) or must secure certification within 24 months from date of acceptance of position.
  • Experience working with multi-site operations.
