Job Summary

Position will support the management of PSE&G’s multi-billion revenue and energy accounting process.

The Principal Accountant has responsibility for supporting all accounting and reporting for PSE&G’s revenues, energy costs and regulatory deferral programs and related regulatory accounting matters.

Responsibility of supporting the monthly book closing by: implementing the appropriate accounting resulting from Regulatory Orders and new business transactions, planning staff's workload and approving their products, partnering and troubleshooting with PSE&G & Service Company Departments to ensure the source documentation and financial outputs are accurate.  This position reports to the Manager - PSE&G Revenue and Energy Accounting  which requires effective communication to ensure accurate and timely monthly financial results under tight deadlines.

Works closely with other PSE&G Accounting groups and ASD functions as well as Utility Finance, Utility Rates, Customer Operations and PSE&G Business Operations, etc. to manage the most efficient and effective process for accounting and reporting ensuring source financial data and outputs are accurate and reported timely.

Responsibility for supporting the implementation of the appropriate accounting resulting from Regulatory
Orders and new business transactions; managing the monthly recording of activities, responding to requests for testimony and discovery for  various regulatory program filings.

The Principal Accountant will support the review of current processes and new proposed programs and recommend modifications and system enhancements where necessary to provide both accuracy and efficiency in the overall process.

Job Responsibilities


  • •    Support the management of PSE&G’s revenue accounting processes.  Support the monthly book closing by organizing, reviewing and approving staff’s work.  Understand new regulatory and business developments in order to record transactions properly on the Company’s books and reporting properly in the Company’s 10K/10Q (GAAP) as well as FERC (regulatory basis) financial statements.

    •    Support the management of PSE&G’s electric and gas default energy customer supply accounting process.  Support the monthly book closing by organizing, reviewing and approving staff’s work.  Understand new regulatory and business developments in order to record the transaction properly on the Company’s books and reporting properly in the Company’s 10K/10Q and FERC financial statements.

    •    Support the management of PSE&G’s regulatory deferral process.  Support the monthly book closing by organizing, reviewing and approving staff’s work.  Understand new regulatory and business developments in order to record the transaction properly on the Company’s books and reporting properly in the Company’s 10K/10Q and FERC financial statements.

    •    Support the management and review of processes and systems to drive efficiency and accuracy in support of accounting, regulatory and management reporting.

    •    Significant contributor to the external and internal reporting process by approving the staff’s analytic schedules that form the basis of the revenue and energy financial statement footnotes and MD&A in the  Company’s 10K/10Q and various schedules.

    •    Responses to interrogatories related to accounting information and analysis that supports regulatory filings.  Manage accounting information required for regulatory planning and filings, preparing and reviewing expert testimony, responding to discovery requests, planning and accounting analysis of key regulatory initiatives and solutions and ad-hoc analysis and research.

    •    Review regulatory orders for accounting impact and issue accounting memos as necessary.

    •    The Principal Accountant meets regularly with the Manager – PSE&G Revenue and Energy Accounting to discuss issues, significant or new transactions and to provide a status update of the department’s operations.

    •    The position will be expected to assist in the development of a high performing team and must actively coach and provide feedback to team members to provide ongoing growth and improvement.

Job Specific Qualifications

Required Skills, Competencies, Education and Experience:

•    Bachelor degree in Accounting or Finance or related field.
•    Minimum of 5 years of relevant accounting experience.
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to effectively articulate and present to management and others within the organization, as well as external regulatory stakeholders such as BPU staff, Rate Counsel, etc.
•    Advanced Excel skills utilizing V-lookup and pivot tables and advanced formulas.
•    Demonstrated ability to work independently, accomplish tasks and resolve issues with a sense of urgency under tight timelines.
Desired Skills, Competencies, Education and Experience:

•    Utility accounting knowledge.
•    CPA and/or advanced degree.
•    SAP experience in financial statement preparation and analysis.
•    Blackline experience in account reconciliation and journal entry review
•    Project Management experience.
