Job Summary

This position is within the Protection and Controls (P&C) Design group which is part of the Projects and Construction organization.  This position requires broad knowledge of electrical utility and substation engineering principles and practices acquired through progressive experience and education. This position requires a strong technical background in protection and controls to develop and implement designs for existing and new transmission and distribution projects.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide designs of the protection and controls for electrical utility projects for transmission and distribution level voltages within the PSE&G operating territory.
  • Proficiency working on protection and control drawings including one line diagrams, relay protection, control schematics, instrumentation and alarm schematics, SCADA controls, rack and panel views, wiring diagrams, cable schedules and bill of materials.
  • Work collaboratively with electrical layout designers, civil designers, electrical project engineers, system protection engineers, construction supervisors, and construction contract personnel.
  • Provide guidance and reviews of protection and controls designs completed by A&E's or other junior designers.
  • Conduct site walkdowns as required to assess field conditions, evaluate scope of work, compare, or verify drawing content, and meet with construction personnel and other stakeholders to collaborate project requirements. 
  • Provide technical expertise to division and/or construction personnel.
  • Coordinate with vendors and manufacturers and review technical documentation including vendor drawings.
  • Lead and mentor junior designers and actively participate in technical discussions as needed by the project team(s).

Job Specific Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Four (4) years or more of electrical utility experience and knowledge of electrical substations and switching stations equipment – including but not limited to: transformers, circuit breakers, medium voltage switchgear, gas insulated substations (GIS), regulators, capacitor banks, and disconnect switches, etc.
  • Candidate must possess a proficient knowledge of protective relay schemes and applications, SCADA, metering, A.C & D.C power and controls, alarms, fiber optic communication and equipment monitoring systems.
  • Computer skills: MicroStation (Bentley) CADD, MS Office (Word, Excel), Acrobat, etc.
  • Proficient in working on one line controls, schematics for protective relays including microprocessor relays, control schematics, alarms, auxiliary power, SCADA, and metering circuits, etc. and understanding of electrical layout drawings to effectively support projects.
  • Clear and concise writing and verbal communications skills.
  • Experience leading large, complicated design project including GIS projects, as well as adhering to project schedules and preparing man-hour estimates.
  • Experience in reviewing design work from other A&E's to comply with PSE&G standards.
  • Shall work with minimum of supervision and be a good team player.
  • Because the job requires driving to company locations and off-site assignments and events, candidate must possess a valid driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driver history.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Advanced degree or technical training
  • Familiarity with utility best practices, IEEE, ASME, NESC and NEMA Standards
  • Experience with PLCs, substation data concentrators, digital fault recorders and similar equipment
